Nations are held together by their common heritage and part of that heritage are the flags and symbols that represent the nation and its history. The single "Lion Passant" makes its appearance on the Arms of the Saxon King Alfred the Great in 871AD, to be joined by the second on the Arms of King William I in 1066 and the third on the Arms of King Richard I, the Lion-heart, in 1189. Joined with the Lion Guardant of the Royal House of Scotland and the Golden harp of Ireland these ancient symbols still represent the United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It is perhaps an unfortunate omission of history that the Welsh Flag is not included in the Union Flag. However the British Union Flag itself has also been absorbed into the flags of other nations like Australia and New Zealand.
