The urban and densely populated areas of England have now been separated from their old counties and boroughs to form new Unitary Authorities. These areas govern themselves under Parliament. It is likely that over the coming years we will see an expansion of this type of two-tier government.

This green and pleasant land

The English scene is one of variety that is exhibited not only by the country as a whole  but also by nearly every county within it, albeit one that is coming under the increasing pressures of development. However one may still find areas of uniform pastoral scenery. There is scarcely a county which does not exhibit startling changes of scene, of people and of occupation. From the densely populated areas in the south east to the wilds of Dartmoor or the North Yorkshire Moors, the topographic desert of the Fens, the hills of central England and the mountains of Cumbria the country is a natural patchwork, one that is perhaps its greatest asset.
