You can click on the map or use the text menu on the right to zoom in on your area of interest at county level and from there you can select the district or borough where we list the local towns and villages, and then down to parish level many with links to their own websites. On the way you can view photographs, maps, get details of local events and attractions and an increasing amount of historical and geographical detail.

This section of the British Towns and Villages Network is dedicated to the English and the counties of England, since is was designed to present the cities, towns and villages in the setting of their counties. Hence, county by county, it touches the ways of life, history, geography and communities therein.

The urban and densely populated areas of England have now been separated from their old counties and boroughs to form new Unitary Authorities. These areas govern themselves under Parliament. It is likely that over the coming years we will see an expansion of this type of two-tier government.

This green and pleasant land

The English scene is one of variety that is exhibited not only by the country as a whole  but also by nearly every county within it, albeit one that is coming under the increasing pressures of development. However one may still find areas of uniform pastoral scenery. There is scarcely a county which does not exhibit startling changes of scene, of people and of occupation. From the densely populated areas in the south east to the wilds of Dartmoor or the North Yorkshire Moors, the topographic desert of the Fens, the hills of central England and the mountains of Cumbria the country is a natural patchwork, one that is perhaps its greatest asset.

Visitors and Tourists

If you are taking your holiday or vacation in England you will find details of attractions and events throughout this website. As you move around the site you will discover that we display smaller attractions and events as you zoom in to local level. Hence you will find "English County Shows" at county level and "Church Fetes" and local fairs at district level. Organisers of events and owners of attractions in England of any size are free to apply for a listing and they do not need their own website to do it because they will have their own page on our site with as much detail as they wish including a location map and pictures if they are available.
