Guidance for the use of the different maps types on this site.

We have in general two different types of map displayed on this site;

  1. Dynamic maps using the Google Map API

  2. Static maps (images)

The Dynamic Maps of the United Kingdom

These maps appear, like the one above, automatically on all our database driven pages. The map and the data on the map is provided as part of the Google Map API upon which we overlay data in the form of icons from our own information, for example on the hotel accommodation pages we overlay icons showing the position and type of each hotel. You the user may temporarily adjust the settings of these maps to suit your purpose, that includes zooming in and out and panning north, south east and west. You may also change the style of the map from the normal road map, to a satellite image (where available), to a composite of both the road map and the satellite image. Finally the maps will also display a terrain or physical view so you can see if the land is flat or mountainous.

The Static Maps of the United Kingdom

There are also a large number of static maps displayed on this site, some of which you can access directly using the menu on the left. These maps are mainly derived from old documents and therefore the data on them will not change and has no need to be dynamic like the maps above. Some of them are artworks in their own right and are thus included within our National Image Library some of which are which are of such a large scale they are really floor plans. We have an interesting collection of the floor plan maps of Castles and Cathedrals

Topographic Maps of the United Kingdom

Topography is the study of the physical structural surface of the earth, or any other planet for that matter. It is concerned with the elevation and relief of the terrain relating to natural or artificial structure. As a consequence of this topographic maps can also be called relief maps, terrain maps or physical maps however they are all generally one of the same thing, an attempt to show on paper what the eye can see on the ground. There is a minor exception with relief maps as they are usually only concerned with mapping elevation, that is height above a datum point, usually sea-level.

Geological Maps and Surface Soil-type Maps of the United Kingdom

In general Geological Maps are concerned with plotting the bedrock type (sub-surface) over a given area. There are many of different types of these maps, some concerned with actual specific rock types, some with rock age ranges whilst others are concerned with rock groups, igneous, sedimentary etc.

Most geological maps show data that us below ground level however Surface Soil-type maps are different as they display what rock type you would find at ground level and if you are an avid gardener and are about to move house they are useful to let know what work you are in for!
