The map above displays the
principle land uses in the UK around the middle of the
last century. The moorland areas coloured GREEN have
been relatively protected being located within the
National Parks whilst the moorland coloured YELLOW stand
outside the National Parks and therefore lack
significant legal protection. Also shown are the
metropolitan GREEN BELTS of this era that were designed
to protect the landscape around our major cities from
creeping urbanisation. As can clearly be seen these have
failed dismally.
Also shown on this map are the principle forests and
woodlands, coloured BLACK. The total national extent of
these areas as a whole is smaller than that of Greater
London. As a nation the UK is hardly in a position to
criticise deforestation prevalent in other countries as
we have already destroyed ours and made precious little
attempt to resolve the situation. |
