British Overseas Territories

In addition to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises of fourteen territories that were formerly part of the British Empire. They have subsequently decided not to become independent states or have voted to stay part of the United Kingdom. These territories were formerly known as Crown Colonies but that title was amended to 'British Dependent Territory' in 1981 and then subsequently to 'British Overseas Territory' in 2002.

Three of the British Overseas Territories do not have a permanent population there existence being as a result of special treaties, those being the Military Bases on Cyprus and the British Indian Ocean Territory and the research stations in the British Antarctic Territory.

British Crown Dependencies

The three British Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not part of the United Kingdom they have a completely different relationship that being independent countries where the Queen (or King) of Great Britain is also their Head of State. They also have much else in common with the rest of the United Kingdom and co-operate in areas such as Foreign Policy and Defence.
