Communities on the Isle of Gometra
We are not aware of anyone actually living on the Isle of Gometra at the moment (Dec. 2004), the last resident was recorded in the 1980's.
The island is a little over 1,100 acres and is not really an island as it is connected to Ulva by a short causeway as Ulva is to Mull. It was once owned by the Monks on Iona and they utilised the fertile basaltic soil for arable crops. There is an interesting burial ground, Bail'a' Chaidh, with a few old stone memorials. The highest point on Gometra is around 155m. The island is associated with the clan MacLean and MacQuarrie.
The whole island is privately owned and although it is accessible to the public on foot all forms of vehicle are forbidden including bicycles.
