Building a website

Notes for beginners who wish to build a website

We get dozens of requests each week to provide links to new websites but some do not get passed the first hurdle because they are simply appalling. As a web controller you will soon realise that you can only provide links to good websites as to do otherwise will jeopardise your own position in the major search engines.

Are you new to building websites?

If the answer is “yes” then read on…

Designing, building and operating a website is like running a business. It’s going to take a great deal of effort and a great deal of time. Even when you have built your site it will take weeks, if not months, before the search engines to find it and for visitors to start to appear in any numbers, but there are things that you can do that will make the whole thing much easier and much quicker.

If you were going to start a business the first thing you would do is create a business plan and your plan would therefore include the most of the following:

  1. Planning - What is the site about?
  2. Design - What will it look like?
  3. Marketing - How am I going to get visitors?
  4. Finance - Will I make money from it?
  5. Content - What is in it?

You can use the menu on the left to work through the pages of notes that we trust will help you on your way to get a good website onto the internet. Please be aware that we intend to add more notes as time passes and we will be continually amending the existing ones as the "rules" change.
