Building your own website?

Hi.

Your "building a website" information, which is found through your "FAQ - Terms and Conditions" pages is full of very useful information. Info which your average website builder would not really think about, but which could make the difference between a successful website and a website which goes completely un-noticed.

Thank you! :-)

Not everyone's happy!

From Australia

Hello,

Having visited many websites of Britain, most give a view (pictures) of the area and some dialogue of what goes on and so on. Very Uninformative site to my view, here in Australia. Nothing Personal there, mind you. Just thought there would some interesting information... Not to hard..

Thanks anyway. for the Reply at least...

But, on the same day you get one like this...

Hi,

I was pleasantly surprised and I very much like your idea of creating a user album. Fantastic. It is nice to see all the photos on one page, whereas before I checked individual towns so as not to send in the same photo twice by accident. This way, it's easy to keep an overview.

Very well done.

If the weather holds out, I shall be visiting other places and hopefully take some more pictures to add to your site shortly, which is always a pleasure.

Wishing you a very nice week-end....Kind regards,

WEBMASTER - Some you win and some you don't. We'll work on the issues raised from Australia

The reply to Australia

I am as much interested in the views of people who don't like this site as much as I am of those that do.

We do have over 5,000 images on the site at the moment and in recent months we started to allow our users to upload their own to compliment what we have in an attempt to increase the variation of image subject.

There is however one problem with a site that covers the whole country and that is there are loads of pictures of interesting things in the principal cities but when it comes to the villages in the countryside usually the only thing of note is the Norman Church. But they are nominally all look the same http://www.images.british-towns.net/album/album_3_thumbnails.asp?GetPT=91&PassP1=6&PassP2=45.

In a similar vein images of landscapes do not resolve well either as a hard copy image nor on the internet unless the landscape is spectacular. In Australia you have the same problem, look for images of Australia and you'll get three, Ularu, The Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If the was a website called Australian Towns and Villages just how many images of the outback would you publish? English Villages, Scottish Villages and Welsh Villages are very much alike. We display a categorised selection of images of the nation here http://www.images.british-towns.net/

Also in the last few months we have started to allow our user to upload their own news items, with or without images. Once again this is adding variation to the content of the site. This type of facility creates problems of its own as you can imagine the quantity of spam that we get, all of which requires our administrative intervention to keep under control.

Anyway I am grateful for your feedback. We will continue to work to resolve the points that your raised.

Oh! one other thing. We also use a lot of our time actually responding to the email we get, you will find this most unusual. Try communicating with the other sites you suggest are better, you will be lucky to get a response from any of them especially if you make a complaint. Have a good weekend.

From Scotland

Dear Sir/Madam,

Just discovered your website its fantastic ? I'll explore it fully when I get the time ?  The website is so full of info & links it must of taken you a lot of work & maintenance to keep it going? The Scottish Regions are of course really appeal to me being a Scot myself? But will explore the rest of the UK as well in time ? Do you have Tel. No ?  Fax. No  ?  How long has the website being running ?

Cheers

WEBMASTER - Makes our day to get emails like the one above - THANK YOU - Yes, the links do take some time to deal with as there are over 13,840 of them!

From the BBC

Hi

I'm emailing from BBC Arts, we're interested in using a still image of the Birmingham New Street, 1904 from your website. We're making a 5 minute film about the new Julian Barnes book 'Arthur and George' for BBC4 and I wonder if you can tell me who owns this image so we could get a copy and can clear it for copyright?

Many thanks

The two locations i am interested in are Trowbridge and Bristol (and Bath) the plans are still hypothetical at this time but other family researchers have given me some clear locations within those area I have to visit when I come over.
