Explore Edinburgh's best kept secret. Gilmerton Cove is a series of chambers and passageways that lie hidden beneath the streets of Gilmerton on the South side of Edinburgh. The exact origins of the Cove are unknown.
Legend has it a local blacksmith named George Paterson hewn the chambers and passageways starting in 1719 - 1724 taking him 5 years. Archeologists doubt that one man could have completed the work in 5 years and believe the Cove predates Paterson. The Cove has seven chambers with rock hewn furniture table and chairs. Disputed origins range from a secret drinking den for gentry, a Covenanter's chapel, a masonic meeting place, to a Knights Templar refuge. You decide on a guided tour. By appointment only.
