Although just a few miles from the Angel of the North, visiting Birkheads Secret Gardens makes visitors feel as though they are on a different planet. Visitors frequently spot Red Kites and Woodpeckers from the Tea Terraces whilst enjoying excellent quality coffee and exquisite cakes.

The diverse planting in the Birkheads Secret Gardens sends keen gardeners into the walled garden nursery looking for 'that really unusual plant I've only ever seen in books' The gardens are on a south facing slope. The solid georgian stone house overlooks the Topiary Garden, moving along gravel paths, numerous individual themed gardens take the visitor through the three acres of what was originally farmland.

The Gardens, Coffee shop and Plant nursery were awarded the Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award 2010. Not only do they offer Fairtrade drinks etc, grow organic vegetables, keep bees, have 3 working wormeries and produce their own compost from garden waste but will also advise and design eco friendly gardens for clients during the winter months when the gardens are closed.
