A UK Post Code is made up of a number of different parts like these; BS12 6LS or N1 1DF. All together these are known as Post Code Units. Only really large buildings or large mail users have an individual code unit all to themselves. Usually code units are shared between a number of different premises.
It is worth to note at this point that in a built up area an individual Post Code will represent a handful of houses all within a few 100 metres of each other whereas a Post Code unit in a remote or rural area may represent a group of dwellings many miles apart.
