Historical notes about the Parish of Sharnbrook

Here, at Sharnbrook, sleep the citizens of Caesar’s British colony. The Roman cemetery was laid bare in building the railway. Four houses stand in spacious grounds – The Grange and the Tofte, built about Shakespeare’s time, and Sharnbrook House and Colworth House, built in Georgian days.

The church is a noble shrine begun in the 13th century, with a graceful spire set on the tower 500 years ago. It has three tiers of dormer windows, making it a think of beauty. Four queer creatures stare at us from the corners of the tower, and many queer faces with expressions of pain look down on the churchyard. There are splendid chestnuts, and a fine view of an old mill.

There are three brass portraits of a hundred years before Shakespeare’s day showing William Cobbe and his wife with their son Thomas. In the splendid lady chapel (a century older than the body of the church and supposed to be the chancel of a lost church) are beautiful stone seats for the priest, and on the wall is the handsome tomb of Hollingsworth Magniac. It was built in our own time by Charles Magniac, a great collector of treasures, who ornamented the tomb with cupid-like angels and guarded it with a lovely screen of metal work. The beautiful 16th century chancel screen has the curious holes through which those kneeling in the nave may have a view of the altar.

There were still old people living at Sharnbrook a few years ago whom remembered Edward Fitzgerald, the translator of Omar Khayyam. He loved to come here and look down on the church when rooks and daws were wheeling and carving above the spire.
