Barton-le-Clay nestles like a jewel in the hills that bear its name. Queen Elizabeth must have heard of its Barton Pippins, for they were famous apples in her day. The church was old even then. The flint tower stands by a lofty pine looking down on the lane it has known for 600 years. We come through its medieval doorway, still with the old door swinging, into a veritable museum of treasures. The oak roof with ten angels looking down from it is supported by 12 magnificently carved figures of the apostles, each holding his appropriate symbol. Each apostle stands on an eagle carved in wood, and the eagle rests on a stone head of a man in Tudor headdress.
In the chancel is an alabaster figure kept in a wooden frame, a beautiful effigy of St John with his eagle; he is only a few inches high, and the figure is all that remains of a medieval reredos. There is the figure of St James in 14th century glass in one of the windows. In the floor round the altar are some quaint 14th century tiles, and from the same century come most of the window tracery and the aisle roofs. The clustered shafts of the nave with their carved capitals are 13th century, the chancel arch has 14th century pillars added when the arch was widened, and the clerestory is 15th century. There are medieval linenfold benches of silver oak, and two brass portraits, one of Richard Brey, a rector of the 14th century, the other of a civilian of the 15th. In the west window of the north aisle is some glass saved from a ruined church of Arras during the war, and there are paintings of St Nicholas and St George, and a picture of the Presentation in the Temple.
