The Rodings and Surrouning Area U3A
The University of the Third Age, established in Cambridge in 1982, followed an earlier French initiative at the University of Toulouse, in which men and women in their third age, no longer in full-time employment, were encouraged to continue learning and developing. The British model deviated from the French, in not being about members learning from tutors, but about shared learning, still very much the ethos of the U3A today.
Currently there are over 250,000 members of the U3A nationwide, in over one thousand branches. Each branch, connected to the U3A national body by the Third Age Trust, is independent and self-financing. Activities offered locally are totally dependent on the members and their particular strengths and skills.
