Historical notes about the Parish of Badingham

Badingham is spread over rising ground near the source of the River Alde, it has two old halls, one of brick with a moat still wet, and Okenhill Hall of stone with twisted chimneys, an empty farmhouse when we called.

The fine 15th century church, with two tiny lancets in the tower, stands on a hillside whose line it follows, the floor rising towards the chancel.  In the churchyard is the base of the old cross, found under the belfry floor.  An 18th century tombstone of a blacksmith’s family has the familiar inscription ending:

My coal is spent, my iron gone,

My last nail’s driven, my work is done.

There is a sundial over the gable of the flint and stone porch, and a dragon and a man with a bludgeon above the doorway.  A canopied niche in a nave wall has lost all but the wings of its angel, but the font has kept its carving of the Seven Sacraments for 500 years.  The fine hammer-beam roof has richly carved wall-plates, angels, and corbels, and there are five old benches, a handsome canopied pulpit, and an ancient chest.

In the chancel are remains of the canopied 14th century tomb of Sir Robert Carbonel and the big altar tomb of William Cotton, who died the same year as Shakespeare.  By him lies his wife, both being in black, on red pillows.  At their feet kneels a man in Tudor costume.
