Historical notes about the Parish of Corton (Waveney)

A sunken forest bed at the foot of the cliffs and broken masses of masonry along the shore repeat here the ancient tale of the encroaching sea.  Corton's church among the cornfields has a happier story, though its tower and chancel rise from ruins and the better part of the 13th century nave is roofless.  The porch and doorways have rich mouldings to tell of their ancient beauty, and gaping holes in the walls have brought to light a number of Roman tiles the builders found and used.

But the tower, a 90-foot landmark for 700 years, rises in undiminished magnificence, with white flint panels in its stepped battlements; and a bay of the old nave still clings to the chancel which is now the church.  The restoration is time-honoured now, for ruin came upon it in the 17th century, and continued for a hundred years while there was no vicar; but the restorer did his work well and treated reverently the sad church’s remaining treasures.  So we still have the piscina and the three priest’s seats beside it with clustered columns and leafy arches; and on a window-ledge is a 14th century gable cross, weathered and worn but with a Crucifixion scene and a Madonna holding the infant Christ, still exquisite.  On a stone reredos are two old figures and fine new ones to match, set up in niches under a frieze.  Half a score of 15th century benches have birds and beasts on their elbows, though the heads have gone.  The 15th century font has found an unusual place almost beneath the chancel arch; lions guard its base, and other lions and proud shield-bearing angels fill its panels.

There was seen here for a little while in our time a remarkable spectacle due to the sea’s encroachment, an old well, sunk 20 feet in the ground, suddenly seen standing 20 feet high like a chimney.  The well had been sunk long ago by a farmer, strongly built with a flint lining, and the sea, gradually creeping up to it, at last washed away the sandy soil around it and left the well standing.
