Historical notes about the Town of Cirencester

Cirencester

The name is pronounced ‘Sissiter' or ‘Sairencester' (there are other versions); and the second two syllables are a reminder that the town was the Roman Corinium (see relics in Museum). Outside the town is the Royal Agricultural College. A comfortable prosperity about the streets, shops and houses, under a capacious church. A suggestion everywhere of fox hounds and port wine. Westward of the town Lord Bathurst's park, with continuing woods and plantations, extends 6 m to Sapperton, under which is the tunnel made for the now disused Thames and Severn canal. Visit the woodland inn by the tunnel mouth. Sapperton Church (Queen Anne) has good woodcarving.

Vying with Gloucester itself in antiquity is the picturesque country town of Cirencester, the Roman Corinium and a place of considerable importance until the end of the mediaeval era. Considering its fame and fortunes, it is a little odd that so little in the way of tangible evidence of its greatness remains. But its castle was destroyed in the eleventh century and its splendid mitred abbey demolished, stone by stone, at the time of the Dissolution f the Monasteries, so that of its ancient splendour there is little to show but the parish church. But what a church it is, of the dimensions of a minor cathedral and the possessor of a magnificent tower and a south porch which is one of the architectural treasures of the country!
