The busy centre of a very prosperous farming and fruit-growing area, with breweries, cider factories and important cattle and fruit markets. It was the birthplace of David Garrick and of Nell Gwynne, whose grandson became Bishop of Hereford, and in the cathedral and All Saints Church are the world’s two most extensive collections of chained books, many of them extremely valuable (Caxton’s Golden Legend, 1st Edition, 1483; Nuremburg Chronicle, 1493, etc). The cathedral also contains one of the oldest maps of the world, dating from the early 14th century – interesting alike for its workmanship and for its portrayal of geographical notions of time.
There is a museum of local antiquities; the art gallery has a collection of Joshua Cristal’s paintings. Hereford is triennially the venue of the Three Choirs Festival and of the Three Counties Agricultural Show.
