Historical notes about the Parish of Cottesmore

Bronze Age, Roman, Saxon, and Norman – all were here have been found, with shields buried as an expression of the old belief that the departed heroes would fight in another world with the weapons of this. Cottesmore’s story is nearly 4000 years old.

A splendid Norman doorway survives in the church, but most of it inside is from the 14th and 15th centuries. The finely carved pulpit is Jacobean. The richest treasure of the church is the font, with its arcaded bowl of the 14th century resting on a base much older, with primitive carvings of the Crucifixion and an abbot with his staff.

There is a memorial to William Brereton, who was rector here for fifty years; and another which says:

Beneath this stone lies a dutiful son,
What faults you have seen in him take care and shun:

and another on the coped tombstone of William Westbrook Baker, of whom we are told that he originated a small allotment system in 1830 and invented the plough.

Here in the days of the Stuarts lived Peter Gunning, whom we meet much in the diaries of Pepys and Evelyn. A great scholar of his day, he owed his immunity to the tolerance of Cromwell, and though he used his power to persecute the Nonconformists he is remembered by one of his prayers that has become immortal, For all sorts and conditions of men.
