Historical notes about the Parish of Empingham

Set among fine limes and rich with an avenue of beeches and sycamores, with a river running drowsily by, it has one of the most beautiful churches in the county. Its 14th century tower has battlements and pinnacles, and a spire ornamented with arcading. The richly detailed west doorway has deeply cut mouldings and graceful columns. The arcades have round and pointed arches built when the Norman was passing into the English style.

The chancel and the south transept are 13th century; the building of the aisles was spread over another two centuries. Peeps of old wall paintings and old glass strengthen the impression of past glory. The pulpit is 300 years old, and we imagine that Thomas Lovick Cooper, remembered on a wall tablet, must have preached from it to boys and girls who were still listening to him when they were old, for he was rector here over 60 years, from 1831 to 1892. He was born in the first year of the century and lies in the churchyard.

There is a finely carved tomb built into the wall under the tower, but the most interesting grave in Empingham is the tomb in the north wall of the transept, supposed to contain one of the bodies of the Normanvilles, lords of the manor from soon after the Conquest to the 13th century. They were scholars, preachers, soldiers, crusaders, diplomats; one is on the roll of benefactors of Battle Abbey, and one defended Kenilworth and Plantagenet England, blazing up the burning out in the long baronial wars. Today one of them lies in the tomb in this beautiful church, but who he was and what he did apparently no one knows.

In a field hereabouts is a magnificent round dovecot built of stone; it has over seven hundred nests.
