With Broseley and Coalbrookdale, Ironbridge is important in our industrial history. At Coalbrookdale iron was first smelted with coal instead of with charcoal; at Ironbridge the world’s first bridge of iron (1779) still carries pedestrians across the River Severn; at Broseley (where clay pipes have been made for 300 years) the first iron barge was built and launched in 1787. Ironbridge nevertheless is one of the places where primitive coracles are still used – light craft made of wicker and canvas. Coal-port china came from works a little down-stream, and fine tiles are still made in the area.
