Friends of the Hampden Park
The Friends of the Hampden Park was formed in 2001 to enable the community to get involved in talks with and decision making of Eastbourne Borough Council with regards to the renovation work needed in Hampden Park, particularly with regard to the Decoy Pond which has suffered from silting over some 50 years.
Unfortunately lottery funding was not forthcoming and the Friends are actively seeking sponsorship and support for the works they have identified and have been successful in sourcing funding for new and improved all weather paths through the ancient Ham Shaw woodland area, mentioned in the Domesday book, and successfully sourced a local sponsor to renovate the war memorial in the park which was erected by public subscription in 1920.
The work is ongoing with active participation by local schools from the infants planting bluebell dells to the senior schools running science clubs after school with Friends committee assisting with expert ecology background material, historical data, and the provision of an outdoor classroom combining the arboretum (funded by grants) which includes a unique historical aspect wherein the planting reflects the century the trees, shrubs and bulbs were introduced into the British Isles.
The Friends of the Hampden Park, with help from local schoolchildren, have a website showing some of their work and aspirations and welcome new members. Membership is £5 for life and regular newsletters are printed for the local community and on-line for electronic access.

J Sainsburys PLC have been retailing since 1869 and their goal is to provide great food at fair prices to its customers at Broadwater Way. Sainsburys have long been concerned about their impact on the environment being one of the first organisations to introduce the recycled plastic bag and have gone on to encourage their customers in Hampden Park to reuse as many bags as possible with the successful Make a Difference campaign.
