Further up the Medway Valley is Tonbridge, whose famous inn, "The Chequers," figures prominently on the itineraries of American and other voracious travellers. There are several other ancient houses in the town, which is becoming progressively less picturesque as modern "improvements" sweep away traces of the past. For Tonbridge objects to remaining in an old-world, "stick-in-the-mud" category, and plays its part in the economic life to the county.
