Historical notes about the Town of Newport (Isle of Wight)

Newport

Newport, though the site of the Roman "Media," has little beyond a few seventeenth century houses to proclaim it great antiquity, and even its church is a nineteenth century successor of a building which dated from the seventeenth century. In the chancel of the earlier building was buried the hapless daughter of Charles I, and the fact that this fifteen year old victim of the storms and stresses of her time has been rescued from undeserved obscurity is one of the many merits of Queen Victoria. Witness the inscription on the memorial:

"To the memory of the Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King Charles I, who died at Carisbrooke Castle, on Sunday, September 8th 1650, and is interred beneath the chancel of this church, this monument is erected, as a token of respect for her virtues and of sympathy for her misfortunes, by Victoria R. 1856."
