A busy port town and tourist centre. The daily steamship services from Larne to Stranraer provide the shortest sea journey from Northern Island to Great Britain. Services also run to Preston Dock. Beautifully situated at the foot of a little glen, with hills rising inland, Larne provides a centre from which the glens of Antrim can be explored, and it stands at the beginning of the Antrim coast road.
The district, particularly the little peninsula of the Curran seems to have been quite an industrial centre in Mesolithic times, there being much flint available along this coast. Larne Harbour, from which steamships sail, is a little outside the town.
