An ancient town, once called Rathcealtair. The town was strategically important from its situation beside the beautiful River Quoile at the mainland side of the peninsula of Lecale. Most of the cathedral is modern, but some ancient relics and features remain. The story that the bones of Saints Patrick, Brigid and Coleumba were buried in the churchyard seems to have been fabricated by the Anglo-Norman adventurr, John de Courcy, to conciliate the native Irish. At Saul, 2 miles north-east from the town, St Patrick is said to have begun his mission, and there is a very ancient church at Raholp, 2 miles north-east from Saul. At Struell, 2 miles east from Downpatrick, are holy wells said to have been a place of pagan worship before Patrick’s coming. Ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Inch are 3 miles north of Downpatrick. A fine stone circle stands 3 miles south of Downpatrick at Ballynoe.
