A little town beside Strangford Lough with a castle which, though built in 1850, incorporates earlier buildings. Birthplace of Sir Hans Sloane, whose collection was the nucleus of the British Museum. Edward Hincks, the great Egyptologist and Assyriologist, was rector of Killyleagh for forty years, and there the essential principles which have enabled us to decipher the hieroglyphic and cuneiform scripts of Egypt and Assyria were worked out.
