Unlike that of many great cities, the latter development of Cardiff has been carefully planned, and the main railway line almost completely divides the industrial and dock area from that around the very effective group of public buildings in Cathays Park. This Civic Centre was the first of its kind in Britain, and now includes many important buildings beside the City Hall and Law Courts, the National Museum of Wales and the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire.
The Castle, with its Norman keep on an artificial mound, was given to the city by the Marquess of Bute in 1948. In the Central Library are many priceless Welsh manuscripts and books. Cardiff Arms Park, with a well-known arena used for Rugby football and cricket, is representative of many other open spaces characterizing the Welsh metropolis. Racecourse 2.5 miles west of the city.
Over a hundred different industries are carried on in Cardiff, but most important were the large iron foundries, tin-plate works and iron ship-building yards. It is the principle distributing centre for South Wales, and once exported coal and iron. Today, (2012), much of Cardiff's industrial past has been swept away and replaced with modern businesses. The old docks have been transformed into an extensive marine playground giving the City of Cardiff a fabulous new vitality.
