At Bala occurred the incident which led to the founding of the British and Foreign Bible Society – see statue of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist leader, Thomas Charles (1755-1814), in Tegid Street. Bala has one of the two theological colleges of the Welsh Presbyterians. Bala Lake extends 3 ½ miles south of town.
Bala used to be part of the county of Merionethshire but now is administered by Gwynedd.
