Dolgellau, or Dolgelley to some folks!, is a grim looking, stone-built town with a warm heart. It is a centre for fine walks, ranging from the ascent of Calder Idris and the Torrent and Precipice Walks to the gold-mines at Tyn-y-Groes. Curfew is still rung each night from the church tower. Two miles north are the ruins of Cymer Abbey and 1 mile west is Hengwrt, where many precious Welsh manuscripts were collected.
Dolgelley used to be within the old county of Merionethshire but is now part of Gwynedd.
