In a loop of the river Monnow, just above its junction with the Wye; a market town with very engaging associations. Entrance from the south-west is beset by a structure unique in Britain – a 13th-century fortified gatehouse spanning the bridge across the Monnow. By contrast, there is in the centre of the town a statue of C. S. Rolls, the first to fly from England to France and back again without landing. That was in 1910 and his biplane already has a strangely antique appearance.
Adventure of another kind is represented in the Nelson Museum – the largest extant collection of its kind. The church bells were brought by Henry V from Calais, when the people of that town prematurely and tactlessly rang them to celebrate his departure. Then there is Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose study window is still shown and whose fabulous Historia Regum Britanniae is still one of the marvels of literature.
