Technically a city, St David’s is in fact a remote, small village strangely secluded in the fold of the bare hills a few miles short of the westernmost point of Pembrokeshire.
St David’s Cathedral occupies the site of the 6th-century cell of St David, patron saint of Wales, who was buried here. The oldest part is the 12th-century nave (some of its piers out of the perpendicular) with a 15th-century roof. The Royal arms on the first prebendal stall, which is held by the reigning sovereign, and the inscription on the tomb in the centre of the Presbytery to ‘Lord Edmund, Earl of Richmond, Father and Brother to Kings.’
Almost as imposing as the cathedral is the ruin of the Norman St David's Bishop’s Palace, with fortified walls, great hall with a lovely rose window and its small chapel.
