Historical notes about the Town of Pontypridd

Pontypridd

Pontypridd is a busy town among the hills at the junction of the Taff and Rhondda Valleys and a shopping and social centre for a wide area. When the graceful single-arched bridge over the Taff was built by William Edwards in the 18th century the name of the place was Newbridge, and that name was retained in the great ironworks largely concerned with making naval anchors and chains. The glass factory was one of the largest in Britain. In the 19th century Pontypridd was well-known as a Welsh literary centre.

Pontypridd was once administered as part of the county of Glamorganshire but it is now part of the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf.
