Here are two churches joined end to end, the eastern one of which belonged to a monastery founded as long ago as the 6th century by St Illtud, and famous as a centre of Celtic Christendom and learning. The western church is now used as a museum of antiquities; it was probably at one time the parishioners’ church. The dovecot and gatehouse of the monastery remain, and the 15th-century town hall and the old Swan Inn are worth seeing.
