The River Llwyd receives small honour here today, but this stream it was which operated the hammer-mill that enabled the first tinplate to be made in 1720 – a manufacture of which developed into one of the most important in South Wales. Iron and Steel production has long since departed from Wales and Pontypool has struggled to replace the income it once generated.
Pontypool was once part of the county of Monmouthshire but now resides in the county borough of Torfaen.
